What if the UK’s biggest theme park wasn’t in London or Manchester—but in Bedford? That’s the plan. Universal Destinations & Experiences, part of Comcast NBCUniversal, is developing the Universal Bedford Theme Park on a 476-acre site in Kempston Hardwick. The project aims to open in 2031. It’s expected to boost the UK economy by £50 billion by 2055, create thousands of jobs, and draw 8.5 million visitors in its first year. Here’s what to know.
Why Bedford
Bedford may not seem like the obvious choice, but its location makes it ideal. The site is just 45 minutes from London by train and close to Luton Airport. The flat land and proximity to major roads make construction easier. This area also sits within the Oxford-Cambridge corridor, which the UK government is actively trying to revitalize.
What Visitors Can Expect
Analysts believe we’ll see at least two major roller coasters. One could even be taller than Thorpe Park’s Hyperia. The plan includes immersive tech experiences, a 500-room hotel, and a retail zone open to everyone—even those without park tickets.
How the Park Will Impact Jobs and the UK Economy
The £50 billion economic boost will come from tourism, local business activity, and supply chains. This includes hotels, restaurants, transport services, and more. Universal is also working with schools and colleges to offer training and apprenticeships.
Local Concerns and Infrastructure Plans
Universal and government partners are planning upgrades: better roads, a new station at Wixams, and expanded rail lines. The expanded Wixams station will run 24/7 to help manage crowds. Local leaders have promised ongoing community engagement.
